070Next week the Salt Lake City Transportation Division will be installing temporary planters on 400 South between 1100 & 1200 East to remind those speeding down the street that they are driving within a neighborhood. The planters will remain until mid September.

The City has 6 sets of temporary planters (really  feeding troughs filled with gravel and native plants hand watered by City staffers)  that are being used in strategic locations in 6 of the 7 City Council Districts as part of the “lighter, quicker, cheaper” funding approved by the City Council.

Lighter, quicker, cheaper is local development strategy promoted by the Project for Public Spaces to transform public spaces. You can learn more about this concept here: http://www.pps.org/reference/lighter-quicker-cheaper-2-2/

Lighter, quicker, cheaper” funding  in Salt Lake is intended to allow the City to solve problems and spruce up neighborhood areas in ways that think outside of the box and require less approval or regulation than typical City infra-structure projects require.

To date, some of the funding has been used to create public spaces such as Sugarmont Plaza in Sugar House. See the recent Tribune article on the topic here: http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/politics/56774598-90/approach-cheaper-council-funding.html.csp

In this  particular case, the temporary planters are intended to help solve a speeding problem reported by residents in this area. Fourth South was chosen because it meets the criteria set for the planters such as being a neighborhood street with a speed limit of 25 mph or less.

A meeting to discuss the planters, with everyone interested, is being held by the Transportation Division tonight (September 4th) at 6 p.m. near the  intersection of 1200 East and 400 South.
